Hearing Components, manufacturer of Comply™ products, is a 3M spinoff founded in 1990 by Dr. Robert Oliveira. Dr. Bob, an inventor with a PhD in biochemistry from Iowa State University, has been studying the ear for over 25 years. After pursuing postdoctoral work in bioimmunochemistry and aging at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Dr. Bob worked at 3M for 18 years, developing products in biochemical diagnostics and disposable surgical products. He is an expert on the human ear canal and led the 3M cochlear implants business for five years. Dr. Bob was an elected member of the board of directors of the Hearing Industries Association and the American Auditory Society.

Dr. Bob’s research, which he has presented worldwide, demonstrates that the shape and opening of the ear canal changes as the position of the mouth changes. Hearing Components has used this experience to identify unique, innovative memory foam solutions as the perfect material to enhance and protect hearing. In fact, the National Institutes of Health has awarded several grants to Hearing Components to study the ear and how we hear, with the intent to improve and protect hearing. Dr. Bob and Hearing Components hold over 20 patents.

Our brand name, Comply™, comes from a spin on the word “compliant”. The foam recipe used on our products makes for perfect ingredients for a tip to conform in the dynamic ear canal.
